How to Navigate Wedding Party Drama

Having a wedding party made up of your closest family and friends is a fun part of the wedding milestone—but that doesn’t mean it’s all rainbows and butterflies, right? You may have already experienced some issues with your wedding party, or perhaps you’re navigating these issues now. Either way, it’s good to know how to deal with whatever arises to ensure a smooth and seamless experience for everyone.

Conflict Over Attire

A common issue that arises for bridesmaids and groomsmen can be about the clothing you’ve chosen for them to wear on the big day. If this happens, there are a few options. The first is to try to compromise with your wedding party member if that’s still an option. While it’s your day, you want the people in your wedding party to feel confident in themselves when they’re there. If it’s too late to change up the outfit, consider if you could let them wear something different from the rest of the wedding party that is similar in color and style, but better suited to their preferences.

Conflict Over Money

Another touchy subject for wedding party members revolves around spending. Let’s face it: being in a wedding is expensive! From the outfits to all the events associated with a wedding, it does require a certain level of financial commitment. When this topic comes up, sit down with the wedding party member who’s having an issue to talk about how you guys can work through it together. Perhaps they can skip a certain event or do something to make the cost more feasible. Let them know that you care about their finances and don’t want them to overspend for your event.

Conflict Between Wedding Party Members

You may run into an issue with wedding party members not getting along well with each other. If this happens, try to sit down with both of them and help them hash out the problem so that they can get along. If that’s not an option or won’t work, then sit down with them separately and ask them to be civil with each other for the sake of your special festivities and wedding day. Hopefully this will allow them to be friendly with each other throughout the process and make things less awkward.

Wedding Party Members not Being There for You

This is a special time in your life and you likely want your wedding party members to be active in their roles towards your wedding and all the associated festivities. After all, that’s probably why you included them in your wedding party to begin with! If you’re noticing that someone isn’t participating in the way that you’d like them to, then sit down with them and outline your expectations so that the two of you can get on the same page. Chances are that they don’t even realize they’re falling short, so have a heart to heart with them to address it.

Someone Pulling out of Your Wedding Party

While not ideal, there are times when people may need to pull out of your wedding party. Whether this is for extenuating circumstances or due to financial strain, try to be understanding of their situation. Accept it and move on and don’t let this instance ruin your relationship with that person. Chances are that they feel pretty bad about the situation in general, so move forward to either replace their spot in your wedding party or just adapt to having a party with one less person in it. Either way, your wedding will still be amazing, so don’t let the absence of one person cause you stress or allow you to panic.

Conflict is never fun, but there are ways to mitigate issues and prevent them from ruining the chances of you enjoying this special time with people who mean so much to you. Above all, remember to treat your wedding party members with respect and kindness.
