6 Reasons Why You May Not Want a Summer Wedding

Summer weddings are great for a lot of reasons, especially for those who love the warm months of the year and all the sunshine. That being said, they also tend to be hot, sweaty, and humid. There are a lot of downsides to summer weddings that you want to consider before choosing your date. To help make sure you choose the time of year you want and avoid a miserably warm wedding, here are six reasons why you may not want a summer wedding.

1. You Will Be Competing with Other Weddings for Guests’ Attendance

Summer is an incredibly popular time for weddings. Sometimes it feels like all the weddings you have to go to for the year are smashed between the months of May and September. This can get very overwhelming when you’re juggling different schedules, vacations, and previous commitments. You might feel as though you’re competing for a venue, photographer, and caterer to be available on your date and not booked with someone else.

2. Sweat Is Inevitable

When you get married in the summer, there are going to be times when you and your guests are uncomfortably warm, even if you have an air-conditioned venue. You may find yourself, your soon-to-be spouse, and all of your wedding guests showing signs of discomfort and sweat throughout the ceremony and reception. Rosy cheeks, shiny foreheads, damp armpits—it can get a little gross! This doesn’t mean summer weddings are terrible, but rather that they can be terrible at times.

3. Dressing for the Occasion Is Difficult (For You and Guests)

In case you didn’t know already, summer is hot. It’s the hottest time of the year. All anyone really wants to be doing is swimming in cool water or sitting inside with the air conditioning. When you ask them to come out to your wedding, finding attire that will help them stay comfortable will be challenging. They want to be in shorts and sandals, but you’re probably asking them to wear nice dresses and suits. Not to mention, the bride and groom are in a fancy gown and expensive suit. That can get sweltering pretty quickly, making it exceptionally difficult to find appropriate clothes that also aren’t too stifling.

4. You Will Be Competing with Other Weddings for Venue and Vendor Availability

We’ve already clarified that summer is a popular time for weddings, but that also means that things are in high demand. Venues, photographers, caterers, rentals, and more are being begged for in practically every direction. Some vendors are booked every single weekend of the summer months…which means they get to charge more for their services. When you have a summer wedding, it’s normal to pay more due to how high the demand is and how quickly vendors fill up their calendars.

5. Hot Weather = Thirsty Guests = High Bar Tab

If you plan your wedding during the hottest months of the year, then you should expect your bar tab to be pretty substantial. The hotter it is outside, the more people tend to drink (and no, they aren’t always satisfied with water and lemonade).

6. There Will Be Bugs

If you’ve always dreamed of having an outdoor wedding, you may need to rethink that for the summer months. This is when the bugs are at their worst. Hosting an outdoor wedding with all the delicious food and drink outside is the perfect invitation for nasty little buggers. You may be dealing with bees, wasps, gnats, and mosquitoes during a summer wedding. Make sure you cut the cake before the ants find it…or maybe just consider hosting the event indoors.
